Subject: People v. Miguel Perez – Please Oppose ATI

Text: Hello,

I am writing regarding People v. Miguel Perez,

IND-71917-26/001, to respectfully urge the District Attorney’s Office to oppose an Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) disposition in this case.

While ATI programs serve an important rehabilitative purpose, I do not believe they are appropriate given the nature and severity of the alleged conduct in this case: the intentional killing of a companion animal.

Our understanding and legal treatment of animals is evolving.

New York law increasingly recognizes that companion animals are more than ordinary property, and even pending Resolution 388 calls for animals to be recognized as sentient beings and potential victims of crime.

I respectfully ask your office to treat the alleged killing with the seriousness it warrants, oppose an ATI disposition, and pursue incarceration if the defendant is convicted.
